Adirondacker visits Sackets Harbor, NY.
August 25, 2006

On the eastern end of Lake Ontario, the beautiful northern New York village of Sackets Harbor is a blend of American history graced with winter-worn structures intermingled with modern architecture, diverse restaurants, marinas and docks brimming with pleasure and sport boats of nearly all descriptions.

Located on Black River Bay and only moments away from Great Lake Ontario, it's a great place to visit and spend a few enjoyable hours or days. The entirety of the world renowned 1000 Islands region is within an hour's drive, and the vastness of Adirondack Park and the High Peaks region is easily reached within the framework of a short morning or afternoons easy travel.

Too, our neighbors in Canada welcome visitors by land or water. Watertown and Interstate 81 are just a few minutes east of Sackets Harbor, with
Canada about 30 miles to the north, and metropolitan Syracuse little more than twice that to the south.

From great naval battles to defending and protecting American interests on land, Sackets Harbor's place in history is undeniably important. From honored battlefields that overlook the Bay, to pleasure and sport boats that enjoy the same protected harbor as 1812-era warships, this village is brimming with things to do and see for everyone.

Anyone interested in history or guides to local attractions will find plenty of information. Sackets is the homeplace of Dr. Samuel Guthrie, a surgeon in the War of 1812 who also invented percussion caps for pistols and rifles, and chloroform. His contributions to war and peace may each be inestimable.

The primary medical facility at the nearby US Army's Fort Drum is named
Guthrie Clinic after the famous doctor. Among Fort Drum's earlier names is Pine Camp.

I met a Pennsylvania couple who said they come here several times every year to sail the beautiful waters of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. Visiting locations in two countries and staying with friends who live along the waterways, Marty Mitchell and long-time friend Kathy Webb sail a trailerable, modern tri-hull. Cap'n Marty said he has sailed since the late 1980's, starting with Hobie Cats.
They spoke enthusiastically about the region and how much they enjoy their visits to Sackets Harbor.
As they rigged their craft for a weekend sail, several other boats were inbound or outbound on this pleasant late summer afternoon. Having sailed from this point myself on several occasions, I can attest to the friendliness of the local folks and the awesome views and spectacular sunsets seen only from a watery perspective.
